Manhattan Nature Walk

Stay Free! Daily: Hiking through Manhattan

This site has a blog entry regarding walking the High Line abandoned rail line in Manhattan. There is also a link to a flickr gallery of pictures from the trip.

The last time I was in NYC I was riding in a car with my friend in the same area and I remarked how I would like to do exactly what these folks had done before the tracks went away. Nothing like finding some wilderness in the middle of NYC.

Next Gen Lava Lamp and nice Light Sabres

LaserPod

Hmm. Gonna be one of those days. Multiple things from one site. Anyway the link above takes you to the LaserPod. Sort of a modern day lava lamp. It uses lasers and leds and mirrors and diffusers to either act as an ambient light source or your own personal laser light show. Put the diffuser on and you get the lava lamp effect. Take it off and it's a slow day at the planatarium's "Laser Rock" show. I'm sure the video doesn't do it justice.

Oh, and just to save space, here's a link to the light sabres they offer. Normally I wouldn't care as there seems to be a ton of stuff like this out there but if you watch the video you can see that they have the LEDs lighting in sequence with the sound effect so that it really gives the impression that you are turning a light sabre on or off. Very well executed. Neat.

Crazy windup music critters

Knockman Toys

Crazy UK gadget site Firebox.com has these cool windup toys that each make a different musical noise. There's a clapper, a hulahoop, the original which seems to be drum like, some chims and a guitar. Both kitschy and cute I could see getting them for home. I'm sure they would probably be too annoying at work. I really want to hear what it sounds like if you have them all going at once. Did they plan ahead enough to make them really work together to make somethng that sounds beautiful?

Update: OK. I downloaded all the videos of them working and watched them. They are most certainly more annoying than I realized. They don't run that long and most of the sounds are more clicks and dings than anything actually pleasing. I could still see setting a bunch of them up to run together though. I'm just disappointed that they didn't work harder towards making the sounds pleasing. It would be neat to have someone come up with some toys like this that had musicbox-like qualities that would complement each other as you put them together. Hmmm. Stash that away in the idea file.

Maybe you should just check out the CUBees instead. This is more like what I had in mind. All together now, 'Do, re, moo, fa, so, la, ti, oink!'

Electra Woman and Dyna Girl

Electra Wow! Deidre Hall in '70s superhero tights!

This is a site devoted to the 1976 Kroft series Electra Woman and Dyna Girl. The show just oozed cheesy goodness back in a time when kids shows and cartoons were mostly only on Saturday morning. Of course it was also the show that resulted in the first pubescent stirrings for thousands of boys.

I remember when Saturday Morning TV was so kid-devoted that they would have an evening special at the beginning of the season to show all the new shows. Ah, nostalgia.

Post-it notes Mosaic How-To

a How-To for a mosiac made from Post-Its

This person made a wall mosaic out of Post-It notes as a creative office project. The site has a how-to explaining the method. This would be a neat project for things like comic or sci-fi conventions. You could make a giant piece of artwork that would be extremely ephemeral. Very cool. May be a good bit to save for a story, too.

Cool new Gadget source

Cubes man! Cubes!

Audiocubes.com is a cool source for all gadgets Japanese. You can find all kinds of crazy tech here.

For an example look up the iDog. It's a speaker system for iPods that looks like a little electronic dog and wiggles it's ears and such when you use it with your iPod. It's almost part tamagotchi as it has moods it expresses with it's leds and ear positions.

Other cool things are the very Retro May-Wa Denki TV Remote Control and the Tomy LUMI PAD-20 20 inch Glowing Message Board (also comes in 14 and 10 inch models) a kind of glowing whiteboard.
