U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A?

City Pages - No. 1?

Interesting article about the decline of the US in regards to our position as a world leader. I conciously don't say world power because the main way we are still number one is as a military power. But if this is all true, what the hell are we doing wrong? I am a little skeptical about the accuracy of this because most of the facts are attributed to one book. Need to see the bibliography for that book.

Filecloud: Online file repository

Filecloud - Beyond Gaming Files

Cool. This company is starting this new fileserver service. To break in the new server/website they are giing the first 10,000 people to sign up full paid for access for free until March 31st. Very cool way to upload something for other people to get access to. Might need to get an account here for the gaming clan. They have teamspeak too.

Online Acronym List

SMS Acronym list

Here is a list of the acronyms used by people for instant messaging or SMS messaging. The site it is on provides this list as the file used in their acronym translator. They provide this to help parents understand what their kids are messaging back and forth. From my quick parusal of the list the kids they must have pulled the info from have slipped a few inside jokes into the list. It would be fairly easy to defeat this translator program with the addition of leetspeak to the acronyms.

Cory Doctorow New Short Story

The Infinite Matrix | Cory Doctorow | I, Robot

Cory Doctorow's newest short story. I liked it.

From the site, "About this story, Cory says, "Last spring, in the wake of Ray Bradbury pitching a tantrum over Michael Moore appropriating the title of 'Fahrenheit 451' to make Fahrenheit 9/11, I conceived of a plan to write a series of stories with the same titles as famous sf shorts, which would pick apart the toalitarian assumptions underpinning some of sf's classic narratives."

Cool idea for a clock

Candle number clock - designboom

THis is just one entry in a recycle themed design contest. Although the person who made this particular entry designed it for candles, which is very cool. I was thinking you could do the same thing with LEDs and hookit up to an actual clock circuit so as to make it a working clock. As imagined by this designer it would be more useful as a newyears decoration. You could light up the year ending and at midnight change it to the new year.

Great source for telephones from any era

Oldphones.com Storefront

This site is a great reference for old phones from any era. Need a phone for that 1930s play you are putting on? They got them. And in a new enough condition that it looks like it belongs in someones house as opposed to that one that you found in your grandma's barn. They also have restored every phone they sell to work with modern phone systems. I might need to buy an old rotary set from here just so I can order pulse dialing from the phone company.

Great advice

Everyday Matters: February 2005 Archives

Danny Gregory talks about discovering Bob Dylan recently and how surprised he was that his preconceptions about the artist were so far off. He then continues into advice mode using Dylan's path to illustrate his current view on the best way to get published. As usual, a nice read and some good friendly advice from someone who has been there.

Crazy Asian collection of odd pages, wacky gifs and NSFW items

Wacky Collection

This is a collection of crazy pages that has some really funny animated gifs for posting to sites. Many things NOT SAFE FOR WORK. Do not open at work. Mostly what appears to be this person's collection of racy news and tv photos. But the animated gifs are pretty funny. Saved for later reference. Upon further parusal this is a very particular sense of humor at work here. It basically falls into the following categories. Pictures of cute animals, things shaped like a penis, Penises in funny(?) situations, large breasted asian women, photoshopped political gags. More junk than good stuff but saved for that perfect picture situation.
